Berlin is one of the most interesting cities in Europe. Throughout the city it is possible to see a lot of marks from its interesting history. I was there for three days in June 2018. I went alone so I stayed in a hostel and planned my time according to what I was interested to see.
First, it is important to talk about transportation. The Berlin airport is not so close to the center of the city and it is not connected to the metro system. You can either take a taxi, an Uber, or a bus. I preferred to take the bus because it was cheaper. To pay for it, you must approach one of the venders before boarding the bus.
The hostel I stayed in is called ONE80 and is located right beside Alexander Platz. I really recommend it because almost all is new, clean, and the service was very good. To move throughout the city, it is always a good idea to walk. The most important tourist places are close from one another. Walking gives you the opportunity to get a complete sense of the diverse places of the city. When the distance is long you can either take the metro or the bus.
In terms of places to visit, you must go to the Island of Museums. It is an island in the Spree river with six museums. Some are very old and have a lot of antiquities from ancient Greece, Egypt, and Rome. The famous bust of Nefertiti is in one of them. You can buy a ticket valid to enter all the museums. Right beside the museums, in the same island is the Berlin Dom. This is one of the most important protestant churches in Germany. You can buy a ticket and get access to the dome to have an amazing view of central Berlin.
Walking through the Unter den Linden street (the same that crosses the island), you can get to the Brandenburg gate. This is one of the must see in Berlin. Near the gate you can see the Bundestag. There are guided tours to go inside but you must book them with time. I did the tour and really recommend it. It is a good introduction to the recent pollical history of the country, and you can look at an actual German parliament session.
Another important visit will be the Topographie des Terrors. It is a place where you can see a section of the Berlin wall and an introduction to the history of Nazi Germany. It is close from Checkpoint Charlie, the famous place that connected the two Berlins during the Cold War. Don’t forget to go to a bar and try the beer and eat a traditional German sausage. This is an amazing city with a lot to offer its visitors.
