Buenos Aires

Planning on living in Buenos Aires?

I’ve been living in Buenos Aires for 10+ years and can definitely tell you this has been my best and worst life decision.

This city will teach you that there is life outside work. Are you a sports, arts or food enthusiast? The city’s cultural offering has you covered.

Have you just gained interest in vegan cuisine? What about recycled wood furniture? Or are you into Ayurveda? Buenos Aires offers a vast amount of extra curricular activities that normally take place in a neighborhood near you. The city’s public transportation system is one of the most extensive ones I’ve ever seen. You can literally get wherever from wherever with a maximum combination of 2 buses.

It is here where I discovered that exercising is pretty easy. Normal gyms, soccer courts, martial arts gyms, etc. usually fill the most crowded neighborhoods. I’ve lived in 4 neighborhoods already and I’ve always found a place that fits my exercising needs.

Basically, the city is alive and cultural, sports and comercial activities are everywhere. Compared to other latin american capital cities in which those are concentrated in a few neighborhoods, each neighborhood in Buenos Aires could be thought of as a small city.

But not everything is gold and glitter. If you want to plan your financial future, you might want to think twice. This is a country in which annual inflation surpasses 40%. Even in a context of recession, inflation just seems to rise by the hour. In the recent past, one business meeting I was taking part was interrupted with an announcement; the argentinian peso had devaluated by almost 50%. I almost fainted. My argentinian peers reacted differently: “¿again?”.

However, if you’re disciplined you can hack the system. Learn how to invest in the stock market, play with currency fluctuation, invest on small businesses and you will probably beat inflation.

So in terms of quality of life, I love living here. In terms of how I am building my future financial safety net, I’m not so sure.

Hope this quick summary may inspire you on how to prepare before coming to Argentina.
